so far I have learned that regarding men who love chili:

if they sweat, this mean they have unexpressed passions for other men who love chili
if they like vegetables, they can't handle a horse
go into withdrawal if they get out of sight from the Texas border

I must say, Fuzzy, I never realized how educational this board was going to be

Wino, In regards to the referenced "burn" please clarify "Entry wound or exit wound" Upon entry this chile will give a pleasant "burn" right in the back of the throat leaving the lips & tongue virtually unscathed. We will leave further commentary to others...

This recipe was modified by farmingfool & sent to me, in that form it too had pork...I modified the pork out of it and decided to grill the steak instead of browning in the pot, a very nice touch if I do say so myself... I should say that you are not really trying to "cook" the steak but rather get a nice brown flavor filled "bark" on it...I raise my coal bed up until it is literally touching the bottom of my cooking grate.

Chile verde is usually a reference to the color of the finished product. I am getting flashbacks of Mel Brooks Blazing Saddles for some reason..

As for the parka...I just bought me one of those black wool KGB style coats...when in Rome...I'm still gonna freeze my Southern butt off...what pray tell are your cows doing? Are they inside with you??

Lindsay...shame, shame, shame,...you will find comfort & solice in knowing that I have never seen nor do I intend to see Brokeback Mountain. Lotta truth to the Texas border comment...I have a job stating up on the Arkansas side of Texarcana...I will find a home for my RV on the Texas side...

Leena, Are onions not a vegetable?? Phoenix's own Carolina's tortillas would make a perfect addition to this chili! Also non sweet corn bread as well as corn chips are quite acceptable. Pasta in any form is unthinkable.

You & Lindsay seem to be hung up on this "fruit" thing...

I tend to like cornbread with soupier dishes, this is a fairly thick brew and cornbread could really be a little "chokey" (is that a word?) with this chili.

That said...I will save that battle for another day, another forum...

Frank, Frank, Frank, I think they are a garnish when sprinkled on the top! Sort of like parsley sprigs but, yes, with much more flavor But maybe Pete is right, we 'll have veggies and fruit servings with our protein at dinner

I think I'll go for corn chips or those tortillas, even drive all the way downtown to splurge at Carolina's since I still have not had them. That non-sweet cornbread is not my favorite either. I can't help it. It always seems like it's dry, non-sweet texture is chokey as you described it.

I'm an ex-Northerner too and I do love me some good sweet MOIST cake cornbread but I'll save that for bean soup accompaniment.

Don't worry, Lindsay, you are not alone.... Interesting little recap of learning points you shared, too! I missed that in my late night forum crawling. I need to get here and read before I'm falling asleep!

Beef is a vegetable raised to a higher power. Similarly, beer, which has been sorely lacking in this thread (though not while I type), is also a vegetable - from the same logic. How else would you classify onions and garlic? Chicken stock? . . . connect the dots, folks, same reasoning - look to the source! Celery, tomatoes, chilis, bell peppers, etc. Frankly, IF CHILI AIN'T A VEGETARIAN DISH - WHAT IS?!

Very private note to Frank - no peeking to the rest of you - that outer garment you referenced is fun down 'south' when it gets around the freezing point but below that take the following: wool toque that will cover your ears, wool scarf, long underwear, mitts (not gloves), and, optional but wonderful, - snow boots.

Lindsay: 1) Man sweat is a sign of respect for the object being adored not the creator of the object, hence, it is not unexpressed passion for "other men". 2) By the above logic in the first paragraph, horses are vegetables (and actually men can handle anything). 3) Real men, due to their incredible creativity, are never out of sight of Texas. Even here, in the once again blizzarding North, I can hear the hum of Westheimer Rd. carrying the citizens of Houston to their points of interest...

Well, that should clear up all those loose ends, back to the Corona and lime (2 more vegetables!)
