Utilities are pretty cheap where I live. My gas and electric comes from the same company and the most I have ever paid during the Winter months is about $150 combined. During the Summer, the cost of gas goes down, but the electricity goes up because of the Central Air. I think the most I pay during the Summer is about $80.00 combined.

It was years ago, but when I lived in an apartment where I only had to pay for cooking gas, it was $8-$12 per month.

Becca,
When we bought this house we were moving a short distance, but I still packed a lot in boxes, simply because we had kept the moving boxes from our initial move to Colorado. We did it slowly over the course of a month, because the people we were buying the house from said it would be okay to move stuff into the garage prior to the closing. We never hired a truck either, we simply used a friend's trailer to move the really big furniture. (And, I have a couple of huge pieces.) Boxes make it more manageable, but you won't need to go crazy wrapping the non-breakable stuff.
The price of natural gas has dropped quite a bit. Mine is about $150-$175 in the winter (we have a large house which is heated by gas; in-floor radiant heat), and then drops to about $40 a month during the summer.

And make sure you leave a box with coffee, t/p, meds, and entertainment things for kids and anything else you might need immediately out and handy (expecially the t/p.)

Becca, I had a friend who moved a short distance and he just used and re-used a few boxes. At the end, when he was getting tired and ran out of boxes, he put all of his stemware in a trash bag. There was surprisingly little breakage.
