Alina,
You're right! (You too Jean.)
Chestnuts are downright dangerous to score for roasting, so Andy made this little contraption to make it easier. And, it was even easier for me since he scored all of them!
I really dislike roasting chestnuts...

My mom always had a tray with chestnuts, figs and dates with half a walnut on top, on the table for the Christmas season. I remember helping with the walnuts and dates, but was not allowed to touch the chestnuts. Now I know why.

I actually prefer them prior to roasting, and they are a PIA to get clean enough to eat that way. We have them every year on Nov. 1 (All Soul's Day), not sure how that tradition started. And of course at Christmas.

I'm just not a fan. I wish I liked them, but I don't.

Trust me Josh, if I could have bought them roasted and peeled, I would have. None to be found...

I love roasted chestnuts. One year post holiday, W-S had a scorer on sale which I bought and which works really well, surprisingly. Of course I get teased mercilessly for this one function tool...

Phoenix,
Sometimes one-function tools earn their keep if they make things much easier. For example, I keep my apple peeler/corer, which I use only once a year, because that once it saves me around 6 hours.

Excellent point. I do love my apple peeler. Makes making apple sauce way more tolerable Nancy
