I love big heavy-weight cotton dish towels. Yet, most of the stuff I can find locally is either flimsy or ugly.
Can anyone recommend a good towel?

I think the big Swiss waffle weave towels are great. Not sure if this is what you mean but I am coming to the US in June and can mail you some if you want.

I like the waffle weave towels from WS, I know they're overpriced, but haven't found any I like as well for any less. Also like the old-fashioned flour sack towels, but they're hard to find.
Too many are a cotton blend and I hate those.

Amy,
TJ's used to have halfway decent woven cotton dish towels. Don't know if they still do. I agree that the waffle-weave towels are nice. Terrycloth, on the other hand, does a poor job on dishes.
Flour sacking and linen towels are superior, but they now are $$$$.

TJ's now has the Sham-Wow (tm), only, you know, with the TJ's logo and in lots of different colors.

Sam's & Costco have the floursack towels that I love. Pretty cheap, too. Not too keen on the waffle weave towels. I also love the linen towels but they're so pricey. They last for years though. fitzie

There are no TJs, Sam's or Costco anywhere near us, but I'm heading east in about a month and will have access to both TJs and Costco. I'll check out both of them.
Mary, I'd love some Swiss waffle weave towels!

I guess the end use should guide the purchase. I dry a lot dishes by hand so the cheap sacking towels are the ones I use daily as I think they do the best job for that. I keep cotten hand towels in the kitchen to dry my hands.
No experience with bamboo towels at all.
