So there is this charming set of videos from English Heritage called cooking the Victorian way, with a wonderful actress playing the part of the cook at one of their country house properties. The book is that she is using recipes written down by the person she portrays-Avis Crocombe. I got the book when it was offered, and it’s lovely-great pictures, sturdy binding, and along with the recipes in a redacted form for modern cooks they have included the original text, in a legible font, not a facsimile of the handwritten pages.
I made the chocolate pudding and it’s fantastic! I plan to cook something else from this book soon.

Oh, good to hear!

We were just discussing maybe cooking from this cookbook for Christmas Eve 2022. One of our regular guest couples are Anglophiles and I think they'd get a kick out of it.

Despite the bad rep English food has, I loved cooking from English cookbooks when I lived in England. I have still kept them after 40 years and still make my Yorkshire pudding from one of them. Since it will be only Steve and I maybe I'll make one of the recipes for Christmas. There was one called beef olives? which is basically thin steak around a filling that was soo good. I've never seen anything similar since. Enjoy your Victorian meal.
