Post subject:  No salt spice blends.
My favorite salt free seasoning blend is Penzey's Sunny Spain lemon pepper. I use it on brined meat during the grilling season and on steamed veggies during the cold and flu season.

Emeril's Essence with the salt left out is handy to have around as well

2 1/2 tablespoons paprika
2 tablespoons salt
2 tablespoons garlic powder
1 tablespoon black pepper
1 tablespoon onion powder
1 tablespoon cayenne pepper
1 tablespoon dried oregano
1 tablespoon dried thyme

Jim,
Have you ever used Vinegar Powder or Ascorbic Acid Powder? I read somewhere that if you add these to your salt free blends, they mimic salt. The don't enhance flavor like salt, but they give you the bite on your tongue they way salt does.

That's where I got the idea to start this topic. :oops: My MIL gave us a Kind Heart Gift Box as a stocking stuffer for Christmas. I just tasted the Forward sprinkled on buttered toast and it is really good. I'm thinking croutons and Penzey's recommends it for popcorn, breakfast or dinner potatoes, and grilled cheese.

I also keep some Green Goddess Dressing Base around. We rarely make it as a salad dressing, but do use it for crudités and it makes great egg salad with a modest amount of salt and a few splashes of hot sauce.

I never heard of vinegar powder until you mentioned it, so I have never used it. I am not really aiming for salt free seasonings, but like to have them available to use with brined meat and to flavor soups, etc that have commercial stock in them and already contain plenty of salt. Some of them also include "spice extractives" like oleoresin of celery, rosemary, and basil that are not in my spice cabinet.

I have very few spice blends. I like Penzey's Sandwich Sprinkle and Ozark Seasoning, but neither are salt-free. I make my own garam masala, Madras curry powder, and herbes de Provence - all salt-free. I also make my own jerk seasoning (salt). Other than that I have Old Bay seasoning (salty) and TJ's 21-Seasoning Salute (no salt).

Jim, I also like Penzey's Sunny Spain seasoning/lemon pepper blend, plus their Herbes de Provence, Fines Herbes, and Country French Vinaigrette.

I would probably buy more blends if more were salt-free. I really don't like how many blends -- including those from Penzey's -- are mostly salt. Not only do I feel ripped off, they usually contain more salt than I would add myself. Then all I can taste is the salt.

So, usually I make my own blends when I need them. Try finding a salt-free Creole seasoning otherwise ...

I note that they are delinquent in updating their website...the Penzey's Forward seasoning is not listed anywhere but you can find it if you do a search.
