Frank, I've eaten in Des Moines a few times on various road trips between Colorado and Chicago. Never been horribly impressed with any place I've eaten. A little over a year ago Andy and I stopped at Penzey's there to stock up, and asked them for a recommendation for a lunch place. They suggested Gateway Market, and while I wouldn't characterize it as a 'destination' place to eat, would be great if you happen to be in that neck of Des Moines. Amy P.S.
