Museum of People? Maybe the Museum of History, formally the Museum of Civilization?

I love that spider! We have a long term membership at the National Gallery; they have a decent modern art section (no Tate Modern, which I visit pretty much every year, but still OK), and the special exhibits are often good to excellent.

Paul,

Yeah, sorry, I get mixed up. The people history museum in Vancouver, which is also awesome, is called the Museum of Peoples.

Jean,

It's been a few years since I lived there, but we used to go to Mamma Teresa's for Italian food. It's not modern...it's a bit like Nonna food.

There also used to be a French crepe restaurant in Byward Market that was delicious, and Breakfast on the patio at the Elgin Hotel is good. They make Brie stuffed French toast that is really good, and you can watch the changing of the guard.

I also loved the shawarma places (chicken with garlic sauce mmmmmm!). There is a large Lebanese community so they are fairly common.

Byward market in general is pretty good for food.

This might help too, but I suspect many of these places are $$$:

So, how did it go? If you visit off a family weekend some time, let me know and we can get together! You picked a chilly weekend to be here :) We went to Gatineau for some hiking on Monday morning, and it was 3 or 4 C when we arrived.

Went well! Chilly on Saturday for sure but overall decent weather for driving and touring. Drizzly when we finally arrived on Saturday early afternoon so we toured the Parliament buildings and did the whispering wall (tres cool) and the Byward market, hit the Rideau mall for the Nespresso store (yay) and then went to Gatineau (cheaper beer - yay). We ate Vietnamese in Gatineau since "we" were tired and grumpy and didn't want to cross back for the pub or the Italian place Carey suggested. It was pretty decent and a good experience for the boys as they'd never had Vietnamese food. Sunday was the War Museum (humbling) and then a family dinner at Chris' cousin's place near little Italy in Ottawa.
We will likely be back at some point so will let you know for sure. Same goes if you ever come towards Toronto.

thanks to everyone for their help.

Ottawa area is overrun with Pho places. I alway think, hey, they serve lots of other vietnamese food, I should try some, but I am kind of addicted to Pho, so never get past the Pho.
