That was an interesting article - Thanks Wino! I just set up a raised bed recently, using the Hugelculture method, it which a lot of branches, logs, and leaves are put in the bed, before the soil. This takes advantage of all those soil organisms, to decompose those things. Saves adding a lot of soil, too! I also had a lot of coir blocks in my shed, and I tumbled them in my compost tumbler, with some topsoil, compost, and diatomaceous earth granules (the white specks you see). Drip tape installed. Ready to go for planting! by pepperhead212, on Flickr Bed with greens planted: Greens in raised bed, ready to cover. 9-29 by pepperhead212, on Flickr Covered bed: Covered raised bed 9-29 by pepperhead212, on Flickr When it gets really cold out, II'll switch to a plastic cover - some remnant greenhouse plastic.

I have a bunch of greens in that bed, along with scallion sets. I still have beans, tomatoes, and a bunch of peppers out there, and even a few bitter melons and bottle gourds. It was up to 95º today, but it is getting cooler fast! high forecast for tomorrow is 66º. Crazy weather.
The greens are lettuce, chard, tatsoi, senposai, komatsuna, mizuna, misome, shogoin, and some kohlrabi.
Oh yeah, I just started the hydroponics inside today. Epazote and 3 types of basil, so far.
