The candlestick salad! I've never seen an actual photo of one! Sylvia Lovegren wrote in Fabulous Food, "Men, however, were apt to make ribald comments about the salad's likeness to more anatomical items, and candlestick salad was usually relegated to the strictly feminine luncheon." It makes me wonder what future generations will be snarking about -- "They would just lose their collective minds for three months out of the year and add "pumpkin spice" to everything!" |

I have a different take on these - I think they bring back some nostalgic feelings (of course I just turned 60) - these aren't very far from tuna noodle casserole, tomato aspic, hot dogs and lima beans, a myriad of Hellman's mayonnaise salads, and other foods I grew up on. And, frankly, think of the just published list of the top 10 cookbooks for 2013. Ree Drummond has three of the them - per the article, "she sold a whopping 670,000 cookbooks in 2013, which is astonishing compared to the 1.01 million copies all the other authors in the top ten sold combined." I don't own any of Drummond's books, but I have seen a number of her recipes and an awful lot come from the old community cookbooks that included many of these recipes or relatives thereof - either directly copied from or inspired by. So have we really come that far? (Don't mind me - I get very crotchity when it's cold). |

lol...I never mind you Lindsay...I get crotchity when it's cold too. I am so thankful I did not grow up on these things. My mother was a phenomenal cook, and I was blessed to eat things like pheasant, sweetbreads, duck, etc. growing up. My grandmother (an amazing baker) was not so hot when it came to savory, so a few of these actually remind me of things she made, but I never liked them...except her lime jello/cream cheese/pineapple mold. I made it once for nostalgia purposes on Thanksgiving about a dozen years ago...Andy looked at me like I had three heads. Amy P.S. And do not get me started on Ree Drummond. |

The only thing that we had when I was growing up that resembles one of these dishes, is the Jello dish. My mom would make Lime Jello with lots of diced Carrots and Celery and then we would eat it with a little Miracle whip on top. We loved this when I was a kid and I think I would still enjoy it today. |

Amy, I remember the lime jello, pineapple cream cheese thing. I kinda liked it. I'm still reeling from the spam and lima bean casserole, jellied tomato and the unnamed jello thing. I'm sure the many current and recent past food trends will be laughed at even more in the future...foams anyone?
