I was cooking with a friend yesterday and was shocked over her lack of gadgets and gizmos. She is an excellent cook but I am buying her a zester and a bench scraper very soon.
Mary No offense meant, but why would you want to buy an excellent cook who prefers to cook without gadgets some gadgets? I am much the same way. A sharp vegetable peeler will zest just fine. My board scrapers are the broken off blades of a couple of cheap spatulas. Much of what others have felt I need have shown up in the next church yard sale, once used. The only gadgets that get used regularly in my kitchen are a good coffee grinder and a stick blender.

Really Paul? I have a serious love of my Bamix. I would marry it. And the funny thing is, my friend with the gadget deficiency loves hers too. Jimbo, the bench scraper I got as a freebee at some kitchen store one of those you buy so much you get an extra so many dollars deals. I had to pick something quickly and it was the first thing that caught my eye. I always thought I had other stuff that worked as well but, I must say, it is a great tool and I use it all the time.
Now then, does anyone have a fantastic recipe for those bread tubes of mine?

Mary Mary, I'm not questioning the value of a board scraper in the kitchen. I use the blades of a couple of spatulas for the same purpose. I am suggesting that perhaps your friend does things the way she does by choice. I have a daughter who knows my love of cooking, and is constantly gifting me her latest gadget. The problem is that at I may not use that gadget for a reason, and I hate to see money spent on something that will not get used, not to mention that I must remember to try and use her tools when she is here. I would suggest that you be sure that the tool you think she needs is a tool that she will use.

And I don't have a vitamix. I think they cost about 6 trillion dollars here.

I lust after a vitamix. Every time they are at Costco for a road show I try to justify buying one. Then I realize I never, ever use a blender in my cooking. Only for summer drinks. But with my kids loving Booster Juice smoothies I'm thinking that the cost of a vitamix might be justified in the foreseeable future.
