I saw some dark morello cherries in a jar at Trader Joe's and was considering a pie or tart with them. I'm wondering about the sugar content. Would they be comparable to a sour or a sweet cherry? Has anyone tried them? Deb

They are fairly tart, but the jarred ones make a nice pie filling. They work well in a Black Forest torte as well. The syrup can be used over ice cream or in mixed drinks. Definitely worth trying if you like cherries.

Cook's Illustrated had this to say on that:
Quote:
Although most of these cherry products made a cobbler filling that looked good, only one—jarred Morello cherries from Trader’s Joe—made a filling that tasted good. We loved their deep ruby red color, tart flavor, and plump and meaty texture. In fact, these cherries delivered bracing flavor and a great chew right out of the jar.

I've always used them in CI's cherry cobbler.

I made a tart with this recipe. http://www.cookiemadness.net/2016/05/al ... e-filling/
I can't eat gluten so I used the CI GF pie crust recipe. The dough was a bit tender but the tart was very good.
