In general, unless a watering system is specifically designed to be used from a barrel, it will not work, as the pressure is way way waaaay lower then what you get from the tap. To even get the water to the level of your planter, the barrel would have to be higher then it, and that would just barely get water there, let alone forcing it through small holes. To get full pressure from a barrel it needs to be something like 30ft plus in the air. In places where they depend on it a lot, the storage tanks are often on the roof of the house to get pressure.

Thanks, Paul, I guess that isn't going to work.

Deb,

I have seen posts on the Earthbox forum referring to "zero pressure AWS", and it did not work well for any of them. As Paul said, you need some height to get a reasonable output. I use a rain barrel with T-tape in an herb garden just under the bottom of the barrel, and it feeds ok for the first half of the barrel, but it starts slowing consiiderably, after that, and never gets below about 8". And these things suck up so much water (due to the number of plants put in them) that I can't imagine getting enough in a rain barrel.

I've considered putting pump in mine, but does require a fairly powerful pump.

I'm having a hard time thinking through planting :)

Ditto! We're 3 months out from being able to plant anything outside.

I was at a record 82° yesterday! I may start my cold weather crops early, but not tomatoes, peppers, eggplants and the like. We could have record warmth in March, then record cold in May!

Dave,

Wait, 82? In March? In NJ?

Wow.

All,

So I'm having a couple of problems here, and was hoping that gardners more used to starting from seed could give me some advice.

First, we've been having intermittent pounding rainstorms, pretty much one every other day. Those have really slammed the sprouts from the greens I was planting outside, like the orach and chard; my first set of plantings there is basically obliterated. I don't have a real greenhouse; suggestions?

Second, the tomatoes and peas I started inside sprouted way too fast, they're growing already. It's too early to plant them outside, though; ideas?

Fuzzy, my parents protect their greens with tarps and chicken wire, they may supplement with posts. The chicken wire is bent into a curve (think croquet hoop in shape) and covered in tarps. Quite low to the ground. They harvest greens right up until Christmas most years, even though they are just north of Toronto.
