Emilie,

State legislation aimed at a combination of environmentalism and full employment.

Why in the world can't you pump your own gas in Oregon?

Emilie, folk there have been fighting over this forever. It makes no sense to me whatsoever although I never minded having someone else pump my gas when it was (invariably) pouring rain.

Watch the television program "Oregon Field Guide" to get some excellent insight into Oregon culture state-wide. Every show is 3 ten minute segments, usually on PBS.

Yes, I can definitely see the attraction to not getting out of my car when my tank is on empty and it's raining or I'm tired. But potentially having to make small talk with someone every time I get gas wouldn't thrill me. And I'm an extrovert!

Hope you both enjoy it there, Josh.

Emilie,

If you hate making small talk with random folks, Oregon is definitely not for you. It's pretty normal for cashiers at Fred Meyers to not even start ringing you up until you chat a bit.

Oh my gosh, that would drive me crazy! I'm actually all about smiling and being friendly, but definitely not chatting when I'm in a grocery store line with perishables on the belt and hungry people at home. The only thing worse is when the cashier and bagger jabber on with each other about their favorite this or that instead of pushing the button so I can check out. (Happens at Costco and Martins all the time these days.) Not to mention, waiting at a drive-thru window and the poor employee having to start a conversation with me by asking if I'm having a good day. They are told to do that (and I know they mostly hate it) but I really don't have any desire to potentially tell a stranger that my client is being a PITA or I need the milkshake fast because I've got heartburn!

You don't have to move to Oregon to get that. Folks here do the same. Most of the time it's ok with me (maybe is the old therapist in me). When it is not, and they ask how are you today, my response is really in a hurry today thanks.
