I was at Barnes and Noble today and I glanced at a Cooks Illustrated magazine and I was not impressed at all to the point that I can't even tell you any of the recipes that were featured. If anybody still gets this magazine, what did you think of this month's issue?

I still get it on my iPad. It was yawn-worthy. Grilled chicken breasts (again) flipped 100,000 times and smothered in sugar based sauce, grilled cheese sandwiches, the victorinox chef knife yet again, peach pie that takes extra steps and totally forgets the vodka pie crust, and grilled corn.

OTOH I watched ATK and the tacos with pork and pineapple looked good. When did that website become paid usage only?!?

I had subscribed to the digital version, but after only one issue I was unable to open any without a request for more money. Then yesterday I got a notice that the subscription was about to auto-renew. I canceled that right quick.
When they started using sugar to get a brown crust on foods where they should have been waiting for a Malliard reaction-ie.not caramelization-I basically gave up.
They way that they discover a "problem" in a given item, just so they can correct it is silly.
I page through if I see a a copy at the store, but don't bother to purchase it.

I haven't subscribed for years and do not miss it at all. They have become (IMHO) kind of irrelevant for more advanced cooks. I think Serious Eats is far more relevant to a broader array of cooks.

Serious Eats continues to surprise me with how they are hitting a very broad audience. Problem not quite into the novice scale that CI manages, but across an excellent spectrum from enthusiast up.

I expect if you are new to CI or a novice, it is still an excellent magazine.

I no longer get it, but do watch the TV show on occasion. I agree with the sugar for browning. They are all over that on Cooks Country TV as well.

So may times when Chris is telling us what's wrong with our peach cobbler recipe or out pot roast I am thinking I'm perfectly happy with my cobbler. I think they make the problems up to keep the show going.

I agree with all of this. The new formula is make a stupid mistake and try 30 ways to correct the problem.

SeriousEats is a wonderful resource with many changes coming from Kenji. He even has the other cooks testing recipes. The have always stated that their recipes are tested but that was not true in the past.

Their Chicago staff tends to promote recipes that make no sense and clearly have not been tested. The author tests the recipe....

When the magazine first came out I loved it. Still have a stack of them which I intend to put in the recycles every week but somehow it never makes it. The show has never appealed to me because of Kimball's "best" everything. How does he know it's the best? I find it very annoying.
