Oh, and I agree that you don't need different ones for red and white. Just get a mid-sized classic shape and everything but sparkling works in them.

My criteria for wine glasses is they fit in the dishwasher and no one freaks out if they break. I also don't like drinking out of those ultra huge things I have been seeing lately. Makes me feel like Edith Ann.

I made some of those last year for a gag gift. I have 8 of them left if you would like to buy them. They are actually more expensive then wine glasses, Canning jars aren't cheap.

If you have a Tuesday Morning near you that is the best place to buy inexpensive(and nice) glassware. Having learned the hard way, I now buy an extra box, cause they never come back in the store.
