Jean,
That sounds like a migraine.

I'd put money on a migraine, too. Ibuprofen is pretty effective on them, though, if you catch it early on in the process, so it sounds like you have a good prevention plan.

Jean I have been a migraine sufferer for over 50 years (although retirement and menopause has definitely slowed them down). Best OTC relief is Excedrin because of the caffine. Migraines (no matter what the triger) are caused by a dilation of the blood vessels causing the blood to flow faster and pound against the skull. Caffine is a vaso constrictor and helps ease the pain. For severe migraines, prescrptions are the only help. I rarely drank red wine in the heyday of the migraines, but if I did, I immediately took 2 Exceds (or took 2 before my first sip). Fortunately, I can now enjoy reds with abandon ilene

I used Excedrin for years. It is very effective, but it often gave me "bounce-back" headaches after a few hours. Come to find out, caffeine can do that. I was very doubtful about the efficacy of the ibuprofen; I had never had much luck with it for anything but muscle aches and cramps, but if I get it in my system early enough, it works wonders. Though really, you should see a doc about the headaches. There are lots of new prescription meds out there for migraines. Also, certain brain conditions can mimic migraines.

Jean,
It differs by the sufferer. For me, two things work: naproxen (Aleve), and ice packs direct to the forehead. Other drugs don't help at all. I encourage you to experiment; I found out the ice pack thing by accident, and it's kept me off serious-side-effect migraine drugs.

Jean Bounce back headaches do occur with Exceredrin if you take too many I'm a short timeframe. Most affective prescription for me was Imitrex which is now available In generic form. Oddly enough, once it went generic, Glaxo came out with a new formula, which is essentially the original plus caffine. Same thing as taking the generic with 2 Excedrin. You really should see a doc, no need to suffer today.

I find pain relievers work better for me when I take them with coffee/other caffeine source... yeah I know, big surprise for someone who goes by javafiend

I occasionally get an "eyegraine"...pretty much like a migraine...you get the shimmering etc. followed by near blindness, and occasionally a headache.
My BIL is an Ophthalmologist; he said that it is caused by a blockage of the blood vessels leading to the eyes. His recommended treatment is a double shot of espresso. He says opening up the blood vessels will do the trick.

Thanks everyone. What a caring group of folks! I've gotten pretty good at heading these off, the only thing I can't control are the seasonal ones. You know, I never had migraines before my kids. Honestly. Something about pregnancy just changed my brain.
