I just got done reading Grub: Ideas for an Urban Organic Kitchen by Anna Lappé and Bryant Terry. It had some interesting bits that I hadn't come across before and the recipes are rather intriguing. I think I may try to add a couple of them to the next round of menu planning. |

I got "How to be a Better Foodie: A Bulging Little Book for the Truly Epicurious" by Sudi Pigott. It's a little truth, a little tongue in cheek, and a lot funny. And yes, I would recommend it. |

More recent reading: Eat My Globe: blogger and former publisher from London decides to spend a year circling the globe and eating everything he can find. Sounds like a ripoff of Bourdain, but Simon M. is an excellent writer, very personable and funny. He's also very responsive to e-mail. On the other hand, A Year Of Eating Dangerously was not worth finishing. This should have been a slam-dunk; a journalist writing about extreme foods and the people who eat them. But the writing is extremely dry and makes even a ludicrous situation (like being shot at for poaching elvers on the Severn) dull and uninteresting. |

All, Bumping this thread again with a new recommendation: The Fortune Cookie Chronicles is the most readable and compelling volume on Chinese food in America (and to a lesser degree, around the world) that you're likely to read. Each chapter is a separate story about some aspect of Chinese-American food, but the theme of fortune cookies runs through the book. Author Jennifer 8 Lee (yes, really) answers two important questions: where did fortune cookies come from, and what's the best Chinese restaurant outside China? No, I'm not going to tell you. Read the book. Ok, and the link goes to her blog, which is a fun read in itself. |

Nancy, have you ever read Gastronomica magazine? There is now a book out of collected articles. Amazon has it in their used section. New for $23 and change. I love the magazine. Fitzie |
