Nance, I've been told that the Tower book is a fun read but not precisely factual. Apparently he takes credit for a lot of things which were done by other people. On the other hand: rock & roll chef. Cocaine and haute cuisine. |

OK, the Tower book. I honestly can't say anything nice about it. Arrogant, booriish, self-involved and not sure why this book was written. I learned nothing except I don't like this guy. Yes, kept me "entertained" on a 5+ hour flight, next time I might just spring for $9 for DirectTV. Nigel Slater wasn't much better on the way back. Just not as narcissistic and arrogant. Oh well. |

All, I got Repast for Solstice. This food history book explores the first explosion of the US restaurant industry, in the 1900-1910 period, through menus from restaurants of the period and commentaries on them. As well as major digressions, such as a mini-biography of Upton Sinclair. So far (page 60) it's a fun read and I'm enjoying it a lot. And the full-color menu pictures are really impressive; restaurantiers in that era spent a lot on menu decoration. Plus, you know, I want dungeness crab salad for $0.30. |

I just checked my library system, and none of the libraries have it. Sounds like a potentially great read. Amy |

Thankfully, I have an "in" with my library system, so if you guys have a positive report, I know I can encourage our local library to order it. Amy |

Inter-library loan only has two copies and neither are available right now. Guess I'll have to try back in a few months. |
