30" is standard in kitchen design and has been for decades. When I was remodelling the house, I insisted on one 28" high counter to make bread kneading more body friendly, because I use my upper torso to lean into the dough instead of just using my shoulders. The designer and the cabinet people refused and I acquiesced...

Wino,

Sure. American counters are heighted for a 5'5" woman. But if someone is 5'11" (180cm), the working on a 30" high counter means a lot of bending your neck and upper back. I raised the counter by 7" and my neck got much better.

I suppose my ideal kitchen would have two different counters: one prep counter for me at 36"-38", a prep counter for Kris at 30" that would also double as a kneading counter.

My husband is 6'4" and I am now about 5'4.5". We added 1000 sq. ft to my house when we got married for a new master bedroom suite. I never noticed the difference in sink height in the bathroom until I spent the night at my daughter's. Ours are higher (never measured). However, the toilet height drove me crazy (I felt like Edith Ann), and I was very happy when it broke add I was able to replace it with a normal one. Wino, not sure what height our kitchen counters are, but for long kneading, I tend to use the family room table (it is on the other side of the stove and lower). On the positive side, we were able to utilize every bit of space for cabinets. The ones on top of the fridge and oven Steve uses as well as the 5th shelf in the pantry.

I’ve been thinking about a stand for cutting boards or a kneading board with adjustable legs. I know too many folks in pro kitchens with back issues from working at a bad counter heights.
