KSS,

Short answer: No.

Long Answer: No. In fact, cookbooks are one of the few remaining profitable publishing sectors. Someday maybe every cook and housespouse will have a tablet in the kitchen, but that day is a ways off. Plus the touchscreen is surprisingly useless when your fingers are covered with oil and chocolate.

Love my touch screen in the kitchen but it won't replace cookbooks for me. It was the main reason I wanted an iPad (other than my slavish like need to acquire all things Apple). Heck, I finally got a bigger bookshelf.

Both the iPad and my cookbooks have their share of greasy fingerprints...

Even though I only read E-books now, I will still buy cookbooks. I can see future generations who growing up are using only tablets and computers not buying cookbooks, but only E-Cookbooks. It is what they will be used to using and more comfortable for them. Of course, who's not to say by then that food will only be brightly colored cubes and tablets.

Heck, I didn't even know about the CIA app -- and now I want to buy it -- but that's serious money for an app.

I think cookbooks will remain for inspiration, or coffee-table books, that sort of thing, but for "working cookbooks", I think there will be a revolution, and soon. So, yah, books which are more about the writing will likely end up still in printed form, but ATK Family Cookbook? Absolutely ideal for a tablet, along with many other books. Instant re-sizing (only got 1.5 lbs potatoes!), cross-referencing, conversions, demo videos, etc. You have to remember that the vast, vast majority of cookbooks are essentially collections of recipes.

So yah, I think in the big picture, they will become obsolete, with the exception of special books. You Luddite traditionalists will fade away eventually :)

Paul,
Are you missing the part where I said I got a bigger bookshelf for MORE cookbooks. Please don't tell me it is like buying stock in buggy whips.

I'm with the "no, no, no, no" crowd. Can't think of a more enjoyable way to spend time than paging through a brand new cookbook and mentally bookmarking all the things I want to cook. Can't imagine doing that on a tablet.

Can you browse these aps at BN before buying? Can you check them out of the library? I know I'm completely illiterate on the subject, but there is so much good to say about printed books. I can't imagine life without them.
