Yeah, I really do like them. Some are great reads -- time capsules, almost. Foods of China was particularly fascinating, as was Foods of Provincial France which was written by M.F.K Fisher (recipes by Julia). Foods of Spain is kind of odd. I think the author was sleeping with some Spanish noblewoman because he goes on and on about her (how generous she is to the peasants, how elegantly she dresses, what a great seat she has on horseback). I haven't taken the time to cook many things from the books, but the things I have made always turned out very well.

I have picked up a cook book or two at yard sales, but my best bargain was a brand new Blue Staub 5 quart pot at a discount store here in town for $19.00. When a 4 quart red came in 2 months later the store called me, saying it was $39.99 (can you tell I go there alot, I'm on the managers speed dial  ).

When I got there they were having a draw a discount, sale of 10 to 30% off. I drew a scrap of paper out of a bowl and it said 10% off. I said no I think I'll pass. The manager grabbed the paper from me put it back in the bowl and said here draw again. So I did and it was 15%, I still said no thanks. She then said alright I'll give you one more change... :D . I drew 30% off and bought the pot.

I later dropped the pot one day while taking it home from work. Right on the sidewalk. The lid now has 3 chips on the rim, but I love it anyway.

Laurie

So, I got La Technique, La Method and Table for $15. I thought she had the Foods of the World but it was another series. She had a Good Cook series, from Time Life I think, that I toyed with buying, but it's a lot of books....but the candy one was intriguing. I might cave and call her back to see what she'd take for the series, does anyone have any expertise on those books?

p.s. Laurie, that's hilarious (the phone call, not the dropping) and such good deals!
