I don't know how many of you are familiar with this book, but it's the follow-up to Culinary Artistry by Andrew Dornenburg and Karen Page. It's not a cookbook, but a reference for modern flavor pairings.

It's a fantastic book and a constant reference for me. If I had to give up every book but one, this is the one I'd keep.

Today I was looking through it trying to figure out what kind of agnolotti I wanted to make for dinner, and went to sweet potatoes, since I knew that would be part of it. After perusing briefly, I settled on what I was going to make. I then googled it to see if there was anything else interesting to think about, and lo and behold, Keller has a recipe almost exactly like what I was planning. (Nice to know I can channel him occasionally. ;) )

If you are not familiar with this book, I highly recommend you look at it next time you're in the library or at a bookstore.

Utterly fantastic book.

Amy

Amy,

Can you give some examples? What do you mean by "modern flavor pairings"?

"Modern" should be taken in context. Culinary Artistry was based upon classical flavor pairings, and this book takes into account today's tastes.

It's hard to encapsulate this book...it's really just something you need to look at. For example, when I looked up sweet potatoes (the book is organized by ingredient), there are 75 things they suggest for pairing. It's more complex than that, but I find it great for inspiration.

I have this too and love it. Basically it shows what flavors go together. Some are no brainers like basil and tomato and others more surprising. I tend to improvise a lot when cooking (and, let's face it, most other things) so it is a fantastic resource. Or I do what Amy did, pick a few ingredients go to the book for go-withs and then google. That and The Food Lover's Companion are my 2 favorite non-recipe books.

Seems like the kind of thng that would make an awesome iPad app. Think I'll have to buy the book, though, exactly the kind of thing I was looking for.

Paul,

You will absolutely love it. Trust me.

Amy

P.S. I agree about the app recommendation. I think I'll email the authors about that.

I love this book too, it is the only one that resides on my countertop. The prose of dish descriptions by chefs is really fun to read. I had a bunch of girlfriends over one night for wine and apps and we read them aloud.

Cleaning up this weekend I found a B&N gift card that I had forgotten. This is going in the cart but I can get another book. What else can't I live without? Maybe a sous-vide primer?

Kindle to iPad. ( ). Priceless. Seriously contemplating new edition for Rod's bday in April; the laptop mess drives me insane.
