This isn't a cooking mag, but our copy of the the Magazine Formerly Known as Newsweek, (now a pamphlet) arrived today, and this article was in it. You all probably know I try to do a lot of volunteer/charity work, and this year has been a beast; we "adopted" four families for Christmas. They are grandparents raising their granchildren. Our "fabulous" social services system does not give any assistance to them because they are family, so at a time when their incomes are diminished, they have extra mouths to feed. (I specifically asked for these families, though.)

No. Medicaid and a food card. That's it.

They can only get AFDC if the parent give up their parental rights legally, as opposed to just letting the grandparents house the kids. And that takes all kinds of maneuvers.

Our local paper had a front page article about food deserts yesterday. I want to get involved in that this year. Seems a crime.
