Just got a notification that my credit card was going to be charged for a renewal of the editors choice book club which I NEVER signed up for. :o  I had to go to my account and unjoin. I'm thinking that this can't be legal.

Nancy,

That's what "chargebacks" are for.

If you purchased anything from CI, it's likely there was a disclaimer in teeny, tiny print that you signed up for the book club by making the purchase. Personally I think it's a dastardly, underhanded way to get business.

It took me months to get the cookbooks to stop coming.

BTW, the America's Test Kitchen Quick Family Cookbook is on an overstock sale for $10. S&H should be less than $4.

I recently borrowed it from the library and found enough interesting words in it that I am considering a purchase.

My favorite words were beef, pork, chicken, lamb, steak, chops, BBQ, grill, brine and marinade followed closely by butter, sugar, cream, flour, vanilla, cinnamon, zest, and lemon. I must admit, however, that the most seductive words that led me to purchase America’s Test Kitchen Quick Family Cookbook are quick, easy, and 30-minute. It fills a gap in my cookbook shelf and gets generally favorable reviews on Amazon.

Ordering the book from ATK was quick and painless. A box now needs to be checked agreeing to “above terms and conditions” when a purchase triggers a subscription and not all purchases trigger a subscription.

In my definition of painless online retail experience (or not online for that matter), I never have to worry about triggering unintentional subscriptions. I don't deal with vendors who are -- there is no other term for it -- trying to trick me.

Of course, for brick and mortar purchase, I also don't give my name and address or even my postal code normally, unless it is a very large purchase. I prefer my transactions to be safe one night stands, with no call-backs and no unexpected 'gifts' down the road.

Be safe out there!
