So, it's quarterly time!

First, contrary to all expectations, Lucky Peach has had a second issue. The new issue's focus is "The Sweet Spot", which is mainly about finding the moment of perfection in food. In addition to articles, and recipes, around fruit, miso, kim chee, killing fish and a chef's life, there are also humorous produce stickers ("This Plum Contains Gluten") and a list of things which taste better if left in the fridge. Lucky Peach is now taking a few advertisements and has raised its price to $12/issue. I also found the recipes in this issue more useful than those in Issue 1.

Culture released their Winter 2011-12 issue. Covered are: Los Angeles cheesemongers, celebrity chef cheese recipes, cheese oil paintings (really), Nigerian Dwarf Goats (baby goats!), rennet, Catalonian cheeses, Rush Creek, British Crumblies, fruit gels, and how to make your own squeaky curds. The last item convinced me never to attempt it, actually. There's also an Ask The Cheesemonger from a co-worker of our own cheesemonger.

Overall, two good issues of good magazines -- enough to sustain me on plane trips to Boston and back.

So are those paintings of cheeses, or painting with cheese oils?

Becky,

Heh. Painting with cheese oil would be impressive, if somewhat monochrome.

No, it's oil paintings of cheeses.

Josh,

I'm not sure where you got the impression there wouldn't be a second issue (or third, or fourth...). After I got the initial copy, I immediately subscribed. Haven't looked at the second one in depth yet, but I'm pretty much a fan of Dave Chang anything.

Amy,

The first issue was such and unlikely collaboration from people with no free time, I certainly didn't expect a second issue to come out on time ... and maybe not at all.
