For all of you fans of Momofuku, David Chang has launched a new quarterly "magazine" called Lucky Peach. I ordered a copy of the first issue, and like it. The issue is "all about ramen", but not entirely (if you know what I mean). While I wish he would take more advantage of modernist techniques than he does, the recipes are very interesting. A good read.

Amy,

I just picked this up to read on the plane on the way to Vancouver. I quite enjoyed it, and recommend it as a good read. Would buy again ;-)

Even though I regard most modernist cooking as obsessive and bizarre, it's fun to read about! And some of the recipes (ramen dough, instant ramen recipes, a couple egg recipes) are relatively "normal". Plus theres some great non-recipe articles, and a fun cartoon.

I look forward to trying his ramen dough. I've never liked the store bought stuff, and the way he waxes on about how good these are has me intrigued.

You say that like its a bad thing!

I'll have to track that down. I'm a big fan of ramen.

Paul,

You can order it online (not sure about Canada) as a subscription, or as a single issue from the publisher. I bought the single issue as I wanted to see if I was going to like it. Based on what I've seen, I'll definitely subscribe.

NOTICE THE ERRATA midway down the page. The one regarding McGee's recipe is particularly important.

Amy

P.S. I agree with you about Fuzzy's comment. ;)

Ugh. Need to convince they companies to sell electronic copies, shipping to Canada makes it very unappetizing. But I'll probably give in anyway.

Paul,

Would it be cheaper if I bought it and sent it to you, then you simply paid me back?

Naw, shipping to Canada tends to be expensive, period. We tend to complain bitterly, but OTOH our Post Office is break even (operational), yours is way way in the hole, plus our population density is less then 1/10, so it isn't surprising that shipping racks up a bit. If I visit the border soon I'll just have it shipped to the US, otherwise I'll bite the bullet.

McSweeny's does have an iPad app, but it doesn't seem to include Lucky Peach. You may want to email them and suggest they do.

Paul,

The weak U.S. $$ factor could work to your advantage right now.

Might just look at it, friends of mine just returned from Canadian vacation, they were shocked that a modest meal for three cost $80.00 US.
