Fitzie,

Heck if I know. Inspired by the issue, I did another sandwich tonight: spicy veggie sausage with peppers, onions, saurkraut, mustard and cheese on a toasted sourdough roll. Yum.

In general, though, I'd go for a fish or shrimp po'boy, proper with remoulade and slaw. Or I once had a tuna melt in Fortuna, made with smoked tuna fish from Trinidad and sharp cheddar from the nearby Lolita Creamery, broiled until the cheese bubbled. Yes, I've remembered a sandwich for three years.

Of course, the standard caprese is never a miss, with fresh mozzarella, fresh basil, ripe tomatoes, olive oil, balsamic, salt & pepper.

I'm also quite fond of a Pain Bagnat, which is dry tuna with capers & vinagrette, romaine lettuce and tomato on a baguette.

You can't beat a good felafel, either. Of course, outside the Middle East it's hard to find a good felafel; for one thing, the pita bread available in most American cities is crap.

I also love the classic NY bagel sandwiches. I like whitefish salad better than lox, but I'll take either.

A true German butter-kase sandwich, with lettuce and pickle, on multigrain with pumpkin seeds, is also a wonderful thing.

See why I can't make up my mind?

Tim,

You'll be happy to know that No. 7 Sub gets a mention in the issue. Tyler's recipe for pickled blueberries is in there, in the "condiments" spread on page 76.

That's a very impressive list! Makes my swiss cheese/tomato on grilled pumpernickle look a little lame. Or my tomato/cucumber/arugula/cream cheese on whole grain. I do make felafel and our local Greek restaurant sells their pitas so that comes out pretty high on my list, too. I don't know how their pita compares, but it tastes pretty dam good to me!

Rhonda,

Nice!

Saveur did have an article about the mufaleta, of course.

BTW, for anyone who loves grilled cheese, the Cowgirl Creamery has opened a grilled cheese sandwich cafe in the SF Ferry building.

Made a Pain Bagnat last night.

SF sourdough roll
Smoked tuna from Local Ocean Seafoods in Newport, OR
Romaine lettuce
Tomato
Sliced black olives
Herbed mustard vinagrette

It was fantastic. Forgot to take a picture, sorry.
