Carey:

This is one of the reasons us avocado-land-natives don't dice the avocado in the shell*. Scoop, then cut, not the other way around.

(the other reason is that you often split the shell, which then makes it a PITA to scoop out the flesh)

I actually do what I saw in a California avocado promotion video now. Half, pit, quarter, then peel like a banana. They slice beautifully after that. But I will scoop if one is too ripe or not quite ripe enough to peel. I've never done the in shell dice since the near miss incident.

Carey:

We have some large spoons which are just about the size of a small avocado half, so it's the work of a few seconds to scoop them. I find that the peeling method is fiddly enough that it takes me longer than that.

Scooping is faster for sure. Now I want avocado toast.

So, ironically, I almost got avocado hand myself last night.

I was doing the initial circle cut on the avocado to split it, and my knife went 3/4 of the way through on the first cut. How? I missed the pit. This avocado had the smallest pit I've ever seen, like the size of a large olive. Knife missed it completely.

I've been laughing at this thread too much. You know that the next avocado is going to get me.

WAIT! The next avocado is tonight!

I just cut up 4 avocados tonight, and thought of this while I was doing it! I also got one of those tiny avocado pits in one of them.

Geez guys, be careful!!! It's awfully hard to mock stupid people when we're the people these things are happening to! (Plus, you never know....maybe the anti-avocado hand mocking committee has staged a mini pit conspiracy just to show us what's what...)

I always do that cut with the avocado on the board with knife cutting down and my hand over the knife. Now, I still do the stick-knife-in-pit in my hand, which is likely the most dangerous move.
