We've been rolling most green stuff in paper towel and then in plastic wrap (open ended on both), and found it helps a huge amount keeping things. Asparagus I store upright in water with a bag over it to increase humidity, but the bag is open on the end. Sometimes keep herbs in a herb keeper, which seems to work well.

I've tried keeping herbs in a container with water and plastic bag, both on the counter and in the fridge. My results were not good either way, I have better luck leaving them in their plastic bag and keeping in the crisper; they last a few days longer in there.
The climate here could be to blame, it is 'semi-arid', that is until I have my new furnace installed in a couple of months (after the heating season is over), I'll add a humidifier to the furnace that will improve the indoor humidity which usually is around 17 or so.

Okay! I've been trying the Fenugreen Freshpaper Sheets and I'm pretty darned impressed! The asparagus that I bought at Costco a couple of weeks ago was pretty near good as new. I've put the sheets in with bunches of cilantro and Italian parsley; I've got one in a bag with a Serrano pepper and Habanero.
I've got several going in with different items. I'll be back with more results later.

Huh.

Anyone else for doing a head-to-head between Freshpaper and just plastic + paper towels? Now I'm curious.

I have it on my wish list to come with my next order. We have a big problem with molding strawberries that I hope it can help with.

My first failure with these green papers was with strawberries; mine molded within a few days. So, Jim, I would not recommend this product for that particular use.
My non-scientific testing continues and I'll be back with more details.

Linda, all:

FWIW, the way we keep strawberries is:

1. wash and dry them

2. put them in paper-towel lined tupperware containers in a single layer

3. seal and put in fridge

This works pretty well; we've been able to keep even really ripe strawberries for 4-5 days.

I always thought that strawberries, like tomatoes, shouldn't be refrigerated because they'do lose their flavor.? And what was that business with vinegar that you mentioned earlier?

from CI:

1. Wash berries in bowl with 3 cups water mixed with 1 cup white vinegar. Drain in colander and rinse under running water.
2. Place berries in salad spinner lined with 3 layers of paper towels. Spin for 15 seconds or until berries are completely dry.
3. Store berries in paper towel-lined sealable container, keeping lid slightly open to allow excess moisture to escape.
