When I first looked at the pictures, I was thinking how in the heck did they build this trough close enough to a Volcano to even try this.

Bay City is getting a new Restaurant that will be using Lava Rocks to cook your food. The rocks are heated to a temperature of 750ยบ and the food is cooked right on the rocks. For a city that doesn't have a restaurant or Pizza Parlor with a Wood Fired or Coal Fired oven, this is big news.

Todd, Lisa,

Grilling over hot rocks is a classic Japanese thing. I went to a restaurant in Tokyo where they heat rocks over a hot fire, and then put them in front of you to grill your own stuff. Fun, but kinda gimmicky.

The "cooking with lava" does give the lie to all those movies where the hero(ine) hangs over a pool of lava while remaining mysteriously uncooked. My arm was exposed to 2100F air once; I got a 3rd-degree burn in less than 2 seconds.

I am surprised to find out that lava isn't as hot as I thought. I mean, I fire kilns higher than that. Never tried grilling over a kiln though, although I have done both soup and stir-fry.
