JB,

My neighbors (our dogsitters when we're away) were walking with their Pomeranians one day about eight months ago. Their elder Pom (a 14-year old toy) was usually carried, but occasionally would walk for a little bit, and because of his age, would not be on leash. Within ten feet of our neighbor a coyote came and snatched the dog. Erik screamed and gave chase, but to no avail. I've also had to chase away mountain lions and coyotes from our yard.

Amy -- Sorry to hear about your friends' dog.

Aaaaand this is why I don't get into this discussion anymore.

My peeve, btw, since I didn't really say, is not with people getting upset about their pets getting harmed or eaten. That was a poor choice of words. Of course, I would be upset, too. After I chased the first coyote out of my own yard, all of my cats stayed inside, but I get that it's not so easy with dogs. My actual peeve and the one that sets me off is when those people then want the literal head of the critter that took their critter.

But, perhaps, most definitely, the less said, the better.

I completely understood (and agree with) your original comment, and guess just wanted to share a story about what it's really like in the boondocks...

I am in the camp that believes that "real dogs" cannot be eaten by a bird...

As for the coyote this seems to work well: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/co ... 05323.html

Frank,

Will do. Never thought of Waco as "central Texas", but that seems like the right fund.

I'm a little disturbed about how the national media has completely dropped any coverage of the plant explosion. What happened? Surely investigators must have some idea by now.

I suspect that the media is not getting the coverage they want from the locals (E.G. New Orleans style) These people are the kind of folk that you go to for help...they feel awkward asking for or being in the position of receiving or needing help. They will be just fine if the Guvment never gets involved. I doubt that there were 10 people in the shelters set up for them; the vast majority were taken into private homes of people blessed to still have a home. That’s just the kind of people they are. That said, they did lose a lot of equipment used by the volunteer fire dept. and EMS and it needs replacing. There are other needs as well but they would never ask you for it but if given I know these people, they will put to good use what is received and they will find someone else in need to help with any excess that there might be.
