Hmmm,

This suggests that when we buy eggs from the egg farm in oregon, we don't actually need to refrigerate them.

Mind you, I've never gotten salmonella from an egg at home, either US factory or organic-farm-unwashed.

Josh,

I pretty much only buy fresh eggs (we have three friend sources), and I never refrigerate them.

The USDA sounds so dumb in this article. I can't wait for my flock to start laying! We order them next week.

Interesting. My grandma used to get eggs from her sister's farm. She would stack them in her unheated garage and eat them for weeks.
I so wish I could raise my own chickens!.....and ducks!

Even after reading this, I bought fresh, unwashed eggs from our local organic market today and brought them home and... put them in the refrigerator. <facepalm> I'm an idiot. (sigh)

Alstro,

So that you could effectively pay $11 per egg? ;-)

I don't buy that. Not the way I'm doing it. We built our coop from leftover supplies, chicks are cheap, we are buying organic non-gmo feed for a great price, plus with all the grass, bugs, and scraps in our yard, we shouldn't have to give them much feed.

Chickens are fun pets, AND you get awesome fertilizer!
