That's a tough one. There might be a way to finesse it if you present it the right way...but it is her book. I bet if you asked her, the morphine would say yes

Question. The recipe I'm planning on making tonight can be improved with one simple change. Do I make it?

Only with permission of the author of book...

Well, it's the first recipe I made this morning, and I cannot speak with the author until about 10 a.m. I decided to do half with the change, and half without. I can always pull the ones I changed if she's not okay with it.

I mean, it's a really small change.

Whether one’s role is stand in, substitute, pinch hitter, or understudy the goal is not to “be” the first stringer. At the end of the day, the injured author will not “own” your performance; you will. Anything that can be interpreted, negotiated, forgiven, ignored, or embraced is fair game. Go for it.

I probably would leave things as is (only because you are standing in for her demonstration of the recipes in the book, and people might want to sample things to decide whether or not to buy the book...which would be misleading if they are new and improved cookies instead of the originals), but since I'm pathologically unable to follow a recipe exactly as written, I'd change away with glee if I was just cooking for myself and thought my changes would taste better and/or simplify the recipe without hurting the final product. It sounds like those cookies are a PITA.
