Given the recent interest in the shrimp in chipotle sauce recipe, I thought that I'd share my thoughts on all of the brands of canned chipotles I've sampled through the years. Hope this helps!

Herdez was my favorite for many years, as it was the hottest, and the smokiest, with at least one morita in each can, to add heat and flavor. Now, unfortunately, I only see them online (yet I see the brand all over, even in supermarkets) but the prices are ridiculous!

El Morena is my favorite now, with more heat and smokiness than others.

La CosteƱa This is my second favorite now, though not quite as hot as El Morena

San Marcos is the one with the blue label I couldn't remember, and it is fairly mild, but with a good flavor. A friend who didn't like things really hot used this.

Embasa Not overly impressed with this one; hot, but not as smoky as some of the others.

Goya Not impressed with this, the one time I tried it.

Pueblo Lindo A recent find, from Aldi, for only 79 cents a can, and not bad! I used it the last time I made Bayless's simple Salsa Negra, and the smoke flavor was good, and definitely hot.

I use La Costena all the time. It's the easiest to find here. Casa Fiesta is the other brand that I can find, but I prefer La Costena.

The local grocery used to carry Herdez, and I loved them, but they don't carry them anymore. San Marcos is the only one I can find now.

Now I want to go on some stupid quest to get Herdez (been known to be obsessive)

Huh, I can probably get Herdez here; the Albertson's a mile away has a pretty stocked Mexican aisle. I'll check.

Thanks for the review.
