Honeycrisp and Zestar begat SweetTango so it is University of Minnesota royalty. It is sweet, tart, crisp and very tasty. It is also patented, registered, and licensed to the point where it is likely to cost twice as much as more pedestrian apples in most markets. I have no idea whether they are good for baking since my target price for baking apples well below the current cost of the super varieties. I still bring home Empires most of the time for casual eating. |

Hi, Wonderful apples at reasonable prices are available at many local farmers markets from heirloom apple orchards. We have four growers at our market. One of them cross breeds heirlooms to create his own varieties. He has two being patented at this time. They cost no more than his other varieties. Tim |

I have a play date at a nearly local orchard that will start picking Northern Spies this Saturday at 9AM sharp. If Cortland, MacIntosh and Jonagolds are also available I think I will have the makings of some pretty good pies. |

Merstar, I haven't tried that one nor have I seen it. I bought Ginger Golds the other day at Costco, the one we tried was awful and the bag went back. We love honeycrisp and Ambrosia for eating out of hand. I need to go picking, but likely won't get there this weekend. Looking forward to all the local apples as our season last year was horrible. |
