It looks like the navels from CA are not coming in anymore. One of my supermarkets is selling them from S. Africa, and I'm wondering if I should try them.

If you can buy just one, not a whole sack, you may as well try one. Then you will know if you like them.

Unfortunately, I can only buy them in a 3 lb bag.

I confess that I've never considered navels as being anything worth seeking out. Not juicy or sweet. Valencias, on the other hand...

We get a lot of SA oranges; we find them too astrigent and seedy. I was brought up on California oranges and Florida so my standards are high. Some South American varieties are worthwhile but I can't offer specific examples.

It appears that the same cultivar of "Washington Navel" is grown California, Brazil, Paraguay, Spain, South Africa, Australia and Japan. I would presume that they are all seedless, or nearly so with the flavor varying only by growing location.
Since fruit can taste different when growing location are only miles apart, I don’t think I would dismiss all of the fruit of a country, a continent, or a hemisphere without a whole bunch of taste tests.

Good point. Although there is very little info on the net about these navels, I've read a few good reviews. I'm going to buy a bag and check them out. Hopefully, they'll be up to par. If they suck, I'll return them to the store. Will keep you posted!
