Just went to Penzey's. It's been a while since I bough cardamom, but I was pretty shocked. $8 an ounce? That's not quite its weight in silver, but it's in the same ballpark.

Apparently hot weather, disease and overfarming in Kerala has affected the crop. Anyway, I'm going to be using less cardamom in the future. Apparently it was even more expensive in 2010; guess I didn't buy any new cardamom that year.

Oh, and in other news, Alhana, the best middle eastern market in the Bay Area, is gone. Closed abruptly without notice. Now where am I going to buy Zatar and Yufka?

I just (about two months ago) got a 3.5 oz bag of dehulled cardamom (always more expensive, since it is just the seeds) for just $5.99 at an Indian grocery store. And it wasn't from several years ago - I always check those dates, even though they may be hard to decipher sometimes. Check this page out at Patel Brothers. They have that Swad cardamom I got for the same price (+ shipping, of course), plus green cardamom for even less than the dehulled.

I don't even look at the prices in Penzey's when I go, or I would probably walk back out the door. I just wince at the checkout counter, and thank them profusely for honoring my hopelessly out of date coupon for a free jar of whatever.

Given SF's diversity, I bet you'll find another source soon but maybe not at the previous price. My husband loves cardamom in his coffee!

For those in & around the Boston area one of my favorite places to buy spices (including cardamom) is in the Armenian neighborhood at Arax Market in Watertown.
