Alina,

Did you use unrefined? If so, that may account for your burning. I use refined which has a higher smoking point...no issues with popcorn burning.

Huh. I use unrefined with no problems. Actually, I don't use any refined oils.

The only refined oil I use is coconut oil. It has a higher smoke point, and has less dominant flavor. I find it's neutral enough but flavorful. Unrefined coconut oil has too much coconut flavor for me.

But that's the thing...it all depends on what you like!

;) Yeah, no such thing as too much coconut flavor.

I have both now, but may have not then. I use unrefined mostly for baking, since I do want the strong coconut flavor (making my overnight oat macaroons with it tonight) and refined for most savory applications. I am making some popcorn as soon as I get off the computer so will try again.

I love coconut oil for popcorn but my husband and kids do not...claiming it is akin to eating sunscreen. So now I mainly use grapeseed for the high smoke point.
I have the same popper JB - how do you do your kettle corn in that one?

I have an electric stove so...

1. Preheat stove to one setting below medium-high. (not necessary for gas)
2. Put 2-3 tablespoons oil in pan. Heat pan just enough to melt oil if using coconut oil.
3. Add 1/3 cup popcorn and 1/4 cup sugar.
4. Put on stove and turn handle like crazy.
5. Stop before the corn slows. (takes practice)
6. Dump carefully into bowl.
7. Salt to taste.

So I tried again using Spectrum refined coconut oil. The popcorn was not as good as usual, a few kernels were brown, had more unpopped, more skins, and I could not taste the coconut at all. So I'll continue using the mostly TJ's sunflower oil with some grapeseed and use the unrefined coconut for other stuff (I have very little refined left and will probably not replace it.).

A friend of mine has a newly remodeled kitchen and she now has a cooktop. I bought her a Whirly Pop so that she can make Kettle Corn and we tried it out last Sunday. It worked really well. I was able to pour the Hot Popcorn out quickly enough so the Kettle corn was just right.
At the same time that I bought the WhirlyPop, I also bought some Popcorn from a Cubscout outside of the BBB store. $10 for 1 lb of unpopped kernels. I popped some last night and I was not impressed. The kernels were small and not very tender.
