I recall the problem last time being having a place that was affordable if only a few people could end up attending, but large enough if a big crowd (say a dozen people) was able to attend.

What about a great house in the US? We aren't probably going to spend a lot of time touring in Italy. We could get a great beach house with a wonderful kitchen & a pool if we would want one. It would skip the airfare to Italy. Just askin' Kathy

If you feel like saving me the airfare, I would suggest the Piedmont rather than Tuscany. The food is wonderful and much less touristy. Last time we were in Tuscany the food was rather hit or miss. Last time we were in the Piedmont we stayed at agrotourism place. A beautiful property that was a winery. They had about 6 rooms and the tiny village right above it had about 5 restaurants, 2 that were Michelin rated. They also offered cooking classes and the price (which I can't quote) was very reasonable for a whole day thing, going to the market, cooking, eating drinking, etc. The classes are only offered during the off season though. We were there during the truffle season and that was great.
I still want everyone to come here as I have been mentally planning all kinds of great activities involving cheese, supermarkets, rösti and horse butchers.

Mary,
I went to school in the Piedmont and absolutely loved it. I also love the food of the region, and the wine's better too.

The Outer Banks has some great houses, but I'm not sure how the food supply would be. We haven't been there for a very long time. Also, not much to do there.
Avalon/Stone Harbor NJ also has some great houses & the food shopping is pretty good, but expensive. I know of a great place to buy seafood. If we go off season, I think we could get a great place at a very affordable rate. Probably right on the beach! There are some good day trips there also. Kathy

Where were you Amy? Besides being more affordable it also gives you more of the road less traveled feel. I also interested in exploring the Emilia Romagna region, it sounds very interesting for culinary exploration.
And then there is Switzerland where, when we are done with horse butchery, we can do a little cheese course.
