And actually I don't mind if someone asks me how I'm doing today. I just say fine, thanks. It's the more personal questions like "Do you have any fun plans for this weekend?" A bank teller asked me that recently. Really??? If I had any fun plans, it feels weird to share them with a total stranger, and if my weekend's going to be quiet, I don't have a desire to discuss my boring life!!

Emilie,

I actually kind of like it, except when I'm in a hurry. I find that chatting with people fosters a sense of community, plus I like to talk. Plus I've found out a fair number of interesting things when chatting with cashiers and taxi drivers as a tourist; I once found out about a music festival in time to attend it that way.

Yes, I can definitely see the attraction to not getting out of my car when my tank is on empty and it's raining or I'm tired. But potentially having to make small talk with someone every time I get gas wouldn't thrill me. And I'm an extrovert!

Take my word for it, Emilie - you won't be making small talk with those pumping your gas in my state! In fact, the majority of them are just learning english, and numbers, credit/cash, and thank-you are the main things they know! I'm not saying that in a negative way - I give them credit for learning the new language here. It's good that most don't have to get directions these days when stopping for gas!

Josh,

There's a lady in Salem Oregon on a gardening forum that you can check out, once you get settled in, as you may get some ideas for things to grow there. She is also vegetarian! Username Oregonred. Actually, there are quite a few vegetarians on this forum.

I've been asked that, in those exact words, fairly frequently lately. Some kind of corporate training manual, not necessarily friendly.

This is so funny! One of the things I miss about the States is the superficial chit chat. It just makes all those day to day interactions more interesting. Here people are very friendly but do not veer off topic!
