Living in one of the driest places imaginable, and also having an end grain board, I'll tell you the only solution I've found is vigorously using board cream at least once a week.
You sure it can't be repaired?

Jim, got a tea kettle? Fill it and let it steam all day. It really helped with one of our cabinets.

This is yet another thing I had never considered living in the humid south! It is pretty interesting.
Sorry to hear it about your board, though.

OK, I know the east coast is getting hammered but we just became enveloped in 'white out' conditions just in time for rush hour. I headed out onto the freeway and immediately circled back off and returned home. No visibility! YIKES!

Made it upstate on the 8:15 train this morning and just finished shoveling approx 10" of light snow from the walk. But the storm hasn't even hit us yet. The worst is supposed to start this evening into overnight. Haven't seen a storm like this in a very, very long time - perhaps 10 years. It's actually pretty cool to be upstate instead of NYC.

Nancy, my brother in Queens says it's crazy right now. For some reason it looks like Toronto will be spared this storm (sorry Wino) and as we are travelling for hockey this weekend I'm hoping that the weather people are right.
Stay safe everyone.

Jim said "The persistent cold weather and nearly nonexistent humidity has dealt what I fear is mortal blow to my companionable 15" round 2" thick end grain cutting board. I found it with a split from edge to center this morning and I fear the prognosis is not good. I administered immediate first aid, but so far there has been no improvement. " Jim, Where I live, the climate is considered to be semi-arid and my home is 'part log'. During the heating season as well as in the super heat of the summer, I use a portable humidifier to keep the wood from drying out and cracking. When the time comes to replace my gas furnace I'll consider adding a built-in humidifier to it. My home and my wood furniture will thank me. I also use plastic cutting boards, while they're boring, they don't split and they come sparkling clean in the d/w. _________________
