Ice storm here - no power since about 4 AM. I have a generator but can't get the big fridge out from the wall to plug it intp an extension cord (it slid in there just fine when it was empty). The other fridge and the freezer are plugged in and happy. Ate lots of soup today so I'm out getting a cheesesteak and a stromboli.

Glad you two are OK. At least you have a huge fridge outside!

Brrrrrr!!!! Minus 20 this morning. So cold my heat pump won't work (I have a unit for my large office that's over the double garage - it supplements the forced air furnace for this room as it gets colder than the rest of the house).
I just don't hang around on the computer as long on cold mornings like this.
Supposed to start warming just a little bit tomorrow.
At least I have power!!!

Linda,

I used to have a very cold office. I used velcro to hang an old blanket around the knee-well of my desk, and put a dog bed heater on the floor -- sort of a western, jury-rigged kotatsu. I also got a great pair of fingerless typing gloves with little heating patches in them that plugged into a USB port. Putting a high-wattage incandescent bulb in your desk lamp and pointing it at your torso can also work wonders. Not too high or too close, though, trust me.

Power came back on about 4:30 yesterday. It looks like the side of the development with underground utilities is still in the dark though. I spent the evening shopping online for power transfer switches.

Heat pump is back up this morning. The magic number seems to be right at -5°.
Any colder and there's not enough heat in the outside air for it to work.
But this morning it's warmed to -1° so I'm toasty again.
My garage gets pretty cold though - night before last it got really close to 32°. But the freezer and the 'garage fridge' both are working fine. And none of the stuff stored out there has ever frozen.

The persistent cold weather and nearly nonexistent humidity has dealt what I fear is mortal blow to my companionable 15" round 2" thick end grain cutting board. I found it with a split from edge to center this morning and I fear the prognosis is not good. I administered immediate first aid, but so far there has been no improvement. :(
