I will be going to Los Angeles for Halloween this year. The Saturday after Halloween, we will be going out to dinner and I get to choose the restaurant. I want to try a new to me quisine, so I am looking for suggestions. Last year we went to a Brazilian Steakhouse. My experience is limited so all suggestions are welcome.

Ethiopian, Cuban, There is a great tapas restaurant with a combo of Spanish and other latin cuisines. I'd have to search to find the name if you are interested. It is not downtown.

Thumbs up on Ethiopian. The spice is not unlike Mexican to my palate and you eat with your hand (singular).

I would also vote for Ethiopian. Middle Eastern or a tapas restaurant would also be good. I like lots of little plates! Also, listen to KCRW's Good Food, they always do restaurant reviews (there should be a list on their website). They seem to often talk about Mexican restaurants that concentrate on a specific region which sounds very interesting.

How adventurous are your travel companions? And what kind of food do you like to eat?

Mary,
I will try anything. My friends aren't as adventurous as I am when it comes to Food. I am leaning towards the Ethiopian suggestion as of right now. I have been looking at YELP as well for Los Angeles. I am also thinking Vegan which would be a first for me.

Todd - Another question - does it matter where in LA and does it have to be LA "proper" as in DT, Westwood, Silverlake, Echo Park, etc.? It's so spread out would be helpful to know. I've asked my brother and SIL and that was their initial response.

Have you been to a Vietnamese restaurant, Todd? Ethiopian is just so much fun as you share everything and eat with your hands and there are totally new tastes. If someone is fussy, it would take the fun away. Vietnamese would have things for daring Todd but also his more cautious companions.

Nancy,
My friends live in Silver Lake and they are willing to go just about anywhere, so distance isn't really a problem.

Mary,
I haven't been to a Vietnamese restaurant. but my friends have.

Todd,
My brother and SIL also live in Silver Lake!
Anyway, their recommendations are Filipino, Persian, Salvadoran and Cuban. They're going to send me some restaurants recos where they've eaten with their group of friends. They try to go to new places (based on recos and reviews) 1x/month but not always successfully.

Here are the restys, in no particular order:
Vegan: Crossroads (on Melrose)
Persian: Shaherzod, Mushti Malone
Cuban: El Cochinto (on Sunset in Silver Lake)
Filipino: Little OngPin (on Beverly)
Salvadoran: Atlacatl (sp?)
And I found these for Ethiopian on Yelp: Merkato (Fairfax), Awash, Nyala.

Hope that helps.

Nance

PS: Silver Lake is a really fun place to be on Halloween. Lots of trick-or-treaters, very festive!
