Last year, this plant started growing next to my patio. A friend of mine tells me that it's a Raspberry bush. My mother being the skeptic didn't believe him and thought I should pull it out. Not listening to my mother like any normal son would do, I let the plant grow. This year it has really grown and there are quite a few berries on the plant, but they aren't Red, they are Black. This plant is in awkward place, and knowing what it is, I would like to move it to another location in the yard. Will it survive the move or should I just let it grow in it's original spot?

I have had great success with moving rasberries....but be prepared to forego a year or two of fruit while the bush re-establishes itself.

We have a couple that have just sprung up under our grapevines. Might get enough for jam.

While I've never moved a raspberry bush, I know that ours back in NY did have a tendency to get to a point where they wouldn't bear fruit because they needed to be thinned. I may be recalling this completely incorrectly, but don't raspberry bushes only grow fruit on new canes? I didn't have much patience for trimming them, so they got a little out of control, and pretty much needed to be cut back significantly.

I'd go ahead and move it now before it becomes difficult to deal with in a confined space.

The best time to transplant is the fall. If possible wait until then. Be careful where you move it because critters love berries too and they might eat them all before you do. You want to choose a sunny place with well drained soil.

Amy -- Black Raspberries grow wild here in Michigan. They don't seem to require much in the way of maintenance. The fruit is fabulous, ubiquitous, and free. Only drawback is that they seem to always grow in the same places that poison ivy also loves.

I agree with Ivy that Fall is optimal transplant time, but I did move 6 bushes in the summer and they are thriving, so if you can't wait, you can move them now.

And yes, fruit only appears on new canes....it is best to cut the spent ones out in early spring. That just gives the bush more energy to produce fruit.
