I love that Bon Appetit can laugh at itself -- take a look at their 15 most insane recipes ever published: http://www.bonappetit.com/blogsandforums/blogs/badaily/2012/08/most-insane-vintage-recipes.html

Thanks Lindsay,

I think those pictures contain some tablescape ideas and culinary challenges for almost any Le Cordon Bleu drop-out. Which dish would compliment a Kwanzaa Cake?

This should be a continuing feature in Bon Appetit. I always love BA for the 1980's pictures of the Pucci clad, bouffanted and smiling wife cooking her multi-course feast for a dozen close friends as her camel hair coated husband decanted cabernet sauvignon. It just looked so easy....

Thanks for the laugh. I could sure use one. However, the "California Waldorf Salad" is an insult to Californians everywhere, particularly those of us who hate jello.

I really really would love to see the recipe for the 7 layer sandwich cake. The pictures remind me of the box of recipes my mom has that she got every month until the box was full. I don't think we ever used the cards but the pictures are priceless.

thanks for sharing.

Jean,

I've seen the sandwich cake elsewhere, especially in collections of horrible recipes. Can't provide a specific reference right now.

Once upon a time, sandwich cakes were extremely popular party food.

JB,

So were little penguins made from boiled eggs, olives, and way too many toothpicks to make them safe to eat: http://www.midcenturymenu.com/2009/07/m ... -penguins/

For that matter the sandwich loaf is brother (or at least cousin) to the meatcake: http://www.blackwidowbakery.com/demo/meatcake/ , so it doesn't seem like we've learned anything ...

I could see a sandwich cake being a hit with the 12-13 year old crowd at my house.
