I usually drink Raymond Vineyard & Cellar Merlot Reserve Napa, which I like a lot, but I want to try some new ones - under $20. I like 'em round and velvety smooth. (wine, that is).

Merstar,

Hmmm. Nope! Can't think of any Merlots under $20 I'd recommend. Hopefully Wino steered you right ...

Merstar - Is this the wine you mentioned? From the Raymond web site: http://www.raymondvineyards.com/cms/wines/detail/reserve-selection-merlot-2008

HI,

2009 Falesco Merlot from Umbria is wonderful and $13.

"The 2009 Merlot is one of the finest wines I have ever tasted from Falesco. It is a decidedly firm, vibrant Merlot that stands in stark contrast to the super-ripe, obvious Vitiano Rosso. Here the fruit is wonderfully precise and elegant. Jammy blueberries, blackberries, cinnamon, leather and crushed rocks are woven into a beautiful fabric. The French oak is layered very nicely, adding depth and flavor, but never overpowering the wine. This is impressive juice from proprietor Riccardo Cotarella."

The 2010 vintage is also excellent.

Yes, that's the one. I must note that it was superb when I started buying it several years ago, but I haven't been as happy with it for the past year or so. It used to be smoother, more velvety on the finish, and now it seems to be a little more tannic, especially on the finish. I've also noticed some sediment lately, so I guess it needs decanting, which I've never done.

The price of $24.00 is high on their site - I buy it here in NC for about $16.99.
