So I have a dumb question. Soda is supposed to be bad for you, even without the sugar. I thought it was the carbonation that was bad for bones, but maybe it is the other stuff they put in it. So does anyone know if home carbonation avoids this problem? I've been circling around these for a while so TIA.

Alina, my assumption was that the bad stuff is the HGFC in the soda. I could be completely wrong though! I wanted it for a replacement for soda water or perrier, which I really like but don't always buy.
Fruit concentrates....I will have to look for that here. The only one I know of here is Ribena.
And Mary, yes, we have an IKEA, so I will look there for the blueberry syrup.
thanks everyone!

Diet colas don't have it, but do have a phosphorus compound that may engender bone loss. So I guess its not the carbonation process. Thanks.

I recall reading somewhere that carbonated beverages of all kinds put you at greater risk of bone loss too, but can't recall the mechanism of action. I do remember that it included carbonated water though.

It's the phosphoric acid that'll get you. That and the fact that you are getting a boat load of the emptiest calories yet invented by man unaccompanied by any of those pesky feelings of satiety to slow you down.

This is really making me crave a Stewart's Key Lime.

Or perhaps a Redpop.

Rock-n-Rye, maybe?

I actually use Pepsi One to keep me for reaching for sweets in the evening. I use a tall glass full of ice and one can with a round of lime. Takes me several hours to finish it, but I don't go for any other sweets and no calories. At the end I end up with water flavored with lime. Something about the carbonation makes me feel fuller. So far no problems with bone loss but I worry about it.

Diet Pepsi Free doesn't have phosphoric acid. Or so I've read. When my sugar cravings get the better of me, I take some acidophilus. That seems to help the most.
