I had to answer never, because although I sometimes use the blender, I never use an 'aerator' (don't own one). I'm not a connoisseur (I just like the stuff) but will note that, in my experience, some wines change tremendously just sitting in the glass for 10 minutes, and some not so much. I'd imagine an aerator would have equally variant effects, so for a proper tasting, you'd want to try multiple wines. I'm gonna try it out (blender method) on my wife with a blind test, she is the snob (or more so anyway). |

I think aerated reds taste better too (smoother, rounder), but I'm usually too lazy to grab my decanter/funnel set, so I tend to use a big glass, fill it about a third full and swirl vigorously. I have to admit I've been curious about the bottle top ones though. |

Straying back on topic - - - please note the following excerpt from the latest CI January/February issue: Quote: To investigate, we acquired several recent-vintage bottles of Cabernet and Sangiovese (both known for their punchy, highly tannic flavors) and held a blind taste test of samples poured straight from the bottle and samples poured from one pitcher to another 15 times or whizzed on high speed for 30 seconds (this seemingly harsh method is employed in some restaurants). The results were remarkable: The undecanted wines were predictably astringent and flat; the wines that had been decanted by pouring were bright and balanced, their tannins less prominent, with more complex aromas coming to the fore. The blender-decanted wines tasted more developed than the undecanted ones but not nearly as developed as the wines that were repeatedly poured. We’ll be turning to this method the next time we need to let wine breathe in a hurry. Hurry test it tonight - or - every night
