Darcie, There is a new trend amongst some Californian Chardonnays...no oak aging. Like you I gave up on many Californian Chardonnays in favor of French White Burgundies, as I prefer how little time they spend on wood. Amy |

Wine tourism is not off topic. It could be the main topic, and Jon Bonné’s article would have succeeded if he had used it to lead wine tyros across the philosophical divide instead of trying to kick them across with stale ‘wine snob” rhetoric There are some interesting things going on the wine hinterlands that don’t even register with wine spectator’s idea of wines worth rating. In the Finger Lakes, there are still a lot of Native and French -American hybrids and some creative winemakers make interesting, satisfying, and affordable wines like Baco Noir and Vincent red wines as well as bone dry versions of normally sweet wines Delaware and Cayuga. Hanging out at wineries and meeting winemakers can be very educational. I have never met a winemaker who is a wine snob, and some them even work at their tasting rooms on weekends. |
